Waiting for the Swimming Pool

A community sauna that provides a space for relaxation, social connection and cultural enrichment within Green Square’s developing urban environment.

Waiting for the Swimming Pool

What’s this project about?

This project will provide a public space that is conducive to both wellbeing and community connectedness. Located on the terrace of the newly renovated Joynton Creative Centre, the sauna will activate the centre as a community hub during the surrounding development work. The sauna aims to combat rising levels of anxiety and loneliness in our urban environment by offering an affordable and inclusive communal space for relaxation and interaction.

The sauna will ultimately enhance and invigorate both the individual and social wellbeing of the local community. The community will gain access to a new recreation facility with a multitude of health benefits. Additionally, it will be a place for social interaction, where new people can meet their neighbours and get involvement in community activities.

The project will be launched in Autumn 2020 as a temporary public art installation during Art Month. Funding will be used to design, engineer and construct the structure, curate and execute the program, and enable the design of a sustainable structure that can be reused / relocated and will minimise energy consumption. The project will be delivered by 107 Projects in collaboration with Studio RJM, Fresh Prince and City People.

Why should you vote for this project?

  • The project will provide a wellbeing-focused social gathering space for the community whilst the swimming pool is being built.
  • Taking a regular sauna has multiple mental and physical health benefits, including a 60% reduced risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
  • The project will offer free/low cost wellbeing activities and public events that will encourage social engagement and community participation.
