What’s this project about?

Project will result in improved survival rates for ill and injured koalas from Port Stephens and surrounding LGA's. Specialist research conducted in unison with University's of Newcastle and Sydney. together with Taronga Park Zoo will target chlamydia and cryptococcosis, the two biggest disease killers of koalas in eastern Australia. Breeding program sanctioned by NSW Government aimed at repopulating Port Stephens LGA koala colonies.

Project key factor in preventing extinction of wild koalas on Tomaree and Tilligery Peninsulas. Environmental education programs involving local and visiting schools will run parallel to generic education programs for the estimated 100,000 annual facility visitors. Significant economic spin offs to Port Stephens business's from tourism drawn to the area because of the project. Deployment of 200 community based volunteers weekly.

Fit out of hospital not funded by either NSW Government or PSC matching grant. If PSC agree to support application and application is successful PSC will project manage the works in conjunction to the construction of the separately funded Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary which includes the building but not the fit out of the hospital component. Construction is expected to commence in May of 2019 and be completed May 2020.
