Successful projects will be announced in September.
Next Steps Mental Health Peer Support Groups
Provides support in a group where everyone, including the facilitator, has lived experience of mental illness.
What’s this project about?
Peer support groups provide a safe, stigma-free, non-judgemental, accepting environment. They are built around psycho-education, sharing of life experiences and examples of pathways to recovery. There is open discussion of mental health issues generally and support from other group members.
Peer support groups are acknowledged as a uniquely valuable ingredient in the recipe for recovery. Currently, there are no peer support groups in the municipality/electorate.
Facilitators will be provided by Turning Point Mental Health Services. The Holdsworth Community Centre will provide premises in which to stage meetings. The project is a twelve-month trial of having a community based mental health peer support groups' service.
Why should you vote for this project?
- Peer support aids recovery from a mental illness.
- Faster/better recovery is of great benefit to those with a mental illness and their families.
